The Elizabeth line is usually the best balance of speed, price, and convenience from Heathrow Airport to central London. Trains run directly from every Heathrow terminal into central London, with no need to change at Paddington for many destinations.
Where to board at Heathrow
Follow the purple Elizabeth line signs from your terminal:
- Terminals 2 and 3: Use Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 station. It is reached via underground walkways; allow roughly 10–15 minutes from arrivals.
- Terminal 4: Use Heathrow Terminal 4 station.
- Terminal 5: Use Heathrow Terminal 5 station.
Check the platform display before boarding, as Heathrow Express trains also serve some Heathrow stations but have different fares and terminate at Paddington.
Main central London stops
Typical Elizabeth line journey times are approximately:
- Paddington: 30–35 minutes
- Bond Street: 35–40 minutes
- Tottenham Court Road: 40–45 minutes
- Farringdon: 45 minutes
- Liverpool Street: 45–50 minutes
- Canary Wharf: about 55 minutes
Trains generally run every few minutes during the main part of the day, although early-morning, late-night, weekend, and engineering-work schedules can vary.
How to pay
The simplest option is to tap in and out using:
- A contactless bank card
- Apple Pay or Google Pay
- An Oyster card
Use the same card or device at both ends. For example, do not tap in with a physical card and tap out with that card through Apple Pay—they are treated as different payment methods and may trigger incomplete-journey charges.
Paper tickets are also available from station machines. Heathrow is outside the standard central fare zones, so the trip costs more than an ordinary Zone 1 journey. Elizabeth line fares are generally lower than Heathrow Express fares, but the exact amount depends on your destination, time of travel, and payment method.
Which stop is best?
Choose the station that minimizes onward travel:
- Paddington: Paddington, Bayswater, or connections toward west London
- Bond Street: Mayfair, Oxford Street, and the West End
- Tottenham Court Road: Soho, Covent Garden, Bloomsbury, and the British Museum area
- Farringdon: Clerkenwell, St Paul’s area, or Thameslink connections
- Liverpool Street: the City, Shoreditch, and east London
- Canary Wharf: Docklands and the financial district
For destinations such as Westminster, Victoria, Waterloo, or King’s Cross, take the Elizabeth line into central London and make one Underground or rail connection.
Practical tips
There are luggage spaces, step-free access, and lifts at Heathrow and the principal Elizabeth line stations. Keep your luggage with you and avoid blocking doors or aisles. For an international arrival, allow time for immigration, baggage collection, and the walk to the station; reaching the platform can easily take 45–90 minutes after landing. Check live departure boards on the day, especially for late arrivals, strikes, or planned weekend closures.
